| HUSKIES LOSE IN CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS |
| - February 20 |
Washington lost a heartbreaker to the USC Trojans on Saturday night in the finals of the PAC-8 Tournament by a final score of 5-4. The Huskies reached the tournament final for the second straight only to come up a bit short again. The Huskies took the early lead of 3-1 in the first period and held the lead through two periods. USC scored the loan goal in the second period making the score 3-2. Washington was outchanced in the second period by a ferocious Trojan forecheck, but the Huskies survived. The Trojans came back in the third period to tie the score 3-3, but the Huskies quickly took the lead again at 4-3. The Trojans scored the tying goal and then the Huskies gave the Trojans a 5 on 3 powerplay advantage late in the game. However the Dawgs killed off the penalties and the game appeared to be heading to OT. However USC's Ryder Fyrwald (who had played only 5 games for the Trojans this year) would score the heartbreaker with just 12 seconds left in the game to win the PAC-8 Championship. |
| WASHINGTON WINS SHOOTOUT THRILLER |
| - February 19 |
Washington won an absolute thriller of a game in Anaheim, California tonight against the Arizona State Sun Devils by the final score of 4-3. Both teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. Arizona State came out in the second period and seized momentum with a pair of goals. But Washington bounced back at the end of the period to make the score 2-1 heading into the third period. By the time everything was said and done in the third period the score would be tied 3-3. The two sides played a scoreless OT period which would set up a wild shootout. The shootout would go 7 skaters deep before Dan Herda would win the game for the Huskies. This was the second time that Herda won a big game for the Huskies in a shootout (I-5 Cup against Oregon).
The win sets the Huskies up for the Championship Final on Saturday night against USC who shocked Oregon by a final score of 4-3. This will be the second year in a row the Huskies play in the final game. Game time is at 7:30 PM and can be listened to online. |
| EWU Pounds Huskies |
| - February 6 |
Washington went to Cheney on a high and the Eagles promptly sent the Dawgs back to Earth. The Eagles beat the Huskies by a resounding 14-2 on Friday night. The Eagles were helped with 10 penalty calls against the Huskies in the first period, but managed only one goal. The Huskies played a closer contest on Saturday night, down 1-0 after the first period, but eventually fell to Eastern by a final score of 6-0. All of the Husky wins this season came at the expense of PAC-8 foes. Washington went 0-9 outside the conference schedule.
Next up for the Huskies is a weekend off and then the team will travel to L.A. to take part in the PAC-8 tournament as the #2 seed. More details on the tournament will be posted soon. |
| WASHINGTON takes two from trojans |
| - January 30 |
Washington and USC met on Saturday night for the second of the weekend's games and the game would not be as close as Friday's contest. Washington needed to win the game to maintain second place in the PAC-8 and it did just that, winning by a final score of 8-4.
On a night of celebrations - Senior Night, Seattle Junior Hockey Night, and the swearing in of Petty Officer Third Class Tara Molle, USCG, the Huskies dominated the Trojans. USC would get on the board first after a Husky penalty, scoring with 7 minutes left in the first period. That would be the only Trojan lead of the night. Daniel Carson would tie the game with two minutes left in the period and that seemed to be a good period for the Huskies. But the purple side was not finished. USC would be called for a penalty with 26 seconds left in the first and it took the Huskies only 6 seconds on the power play to take the lead on a goal by Jordan Chernesky. The Huskies never looked back.
The Seattle Junior midgets entertained the crowd during the first intermission. Most of the Huskies even came out of the locker room to watch the action. When the big kids took the ice again, the action was intense. Three minutes into the period, USC found itself shorthanded two men. The Huskies are lethal on the power play and did not disappoint with the advantage. Phil Harezlak scored on the first penalty to USC so the Dawgs still had the man advantage. Ian Shook would score on USC's second penalty increasing the Husky lead to 4-1. Less than five minutes into the second period, the game seemed to be over as USC lost its legs a bit. USC would score with 1:19 left in the second to gain some life.
The Huskies immediately ended any thoughts of a USC comeback just a minute into the third by scoring a fifth goal. USC however scored less than two minutes later, making the score 5-3. Daniel Carson added his second goal of the night by skating between the Trojan defense and beating the USC goaltender on his backhand with three minutes elapsed in the third. The Dawgs would score their 7th goal a mere seven seconds later seizing all momentum. Sean Hale would end the Husky scoring on the night, giving the Huskies an 8-3 lead with eight minutes left in the game. The Trojans would score one final goal and that is where the contest ended - 8-4.
The two wins keep the Huskies in 2nd place in the PAC-8 conference which would mean a bye in the first round of the PAC-8 tournament. It also means the Huskies would only play one game on the first day of the tourney instead of two.
The Huskies take their final regular season road trip this coming weekend to Cheney, Washington to battle the Eastern Washington Eagles. The Eagles are currently ranked #3 in the ACHA West. |
| WASHINGTON DOWNS USC |
| - January 29 |
The Washington Huskies defeated the USC Trojans by a final score of 3-2 tonight at Olympicview Arena. The Dawgs used a physical, relentless attack to force USC into mistakes. The Husky band was in attendance to help make the Trojans feel less at home.
From the very first shift, when Tyler MacMillan leveled Max Szentveri, the Huskies played a physical hockey game. The only thing that would slow the Huskies down would be taking undisciplined penalties. The Huskies gave USC a power play five minutes into the game, but killed off the disadvantage allowing only one shot on goal. Halfway through the first period the Huskies found themselves shorthanded again for two minutes, but killed off this penalty as well. USC was called for its first infraction with just over six minutes left in the first and the Huskies capitalized. Phil Harezlak received a beautiful pass from Jordan Chernesky through the slot and buried the puck in the back of the net. Less than 30 seconds later however, the Huskies took another penalty. The Dawgs killed off this penalty, but took another one with a minute left in the first period. The Huskies cannot continue to take four penalties a period if they expect to go far in the PAC-8 tournament. Despite the penalties, he first period would end with the score 1-0 Huskies leading.
After exchanging scoring chances and hits, USC got on the board eight minutes into the second period to tie the game. Dan Herda would put the Huskies back on top four minutes later. The period settled into a tight defensive battle until Corey James scored the goal of the night. James took the puck at the SC blue line, skated past a defender, and waited until the goaltender went down. James then skated behind the net to the right and reached the puck back into the crease and tapped the puck in behind the goaltender. The ridiculous goal gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead heading into the locker room.
The start of the third period began with some fireworks as Ian Shook battled for a loose puck in the USC crease. When the whistle blew, Shook got up and was punched in the head by the SC goaltender, giving the Huskies a power play. UW was unable to capitalize on the chance. The Huskies would get another power play advantage midway through the period but could not score. Ian Shook would take his second penalty of the period with just under eight minutes left in the period and USC took advantage of the opportunity. The Trojans would score their second goal with one minute left on their power play to make the score 3-2. The Huskies immediately turned the puck over in their slot, creating a great scoring chance for the Trojans but Danny Dougan was in position and made a great save to maintain the Husky lead. With a minute left USC was given a penalty and the coach was given a game misconduct. The game would end with the Huskies on a 5 on 3 power play.
Game notes: Byron Ma remains out with an injury, but is serving as an assistant coach. Former Husky captain Tyler Durrell was in attendance tonight. The Husky marching band also performed throughout the game.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Olympicview Arena at 6:30 PM. The Huskies are battling to maintain second place in the PAC-8 standings. This would mean UW would have a bye in the first round of the PAC-8 tourney and avoid playing two games on the first day of the tournament. |
| A LOSS, BUT A WIN |
| - January 23 |
Just when you thought you'd seen everything on Friday night, how about power play and shorthanded goals, an ejection, overtime, two shootouts and a new Cup winner? Yes, it was another Huskies-Ducks game in this crazy series. First the bad news, the Huskies lost the game in a shootout by a final score of 6-5 (Ducks win the shootout 3-0). The good news is the Huskies rebounded in a second shootout to determine the I-5 Cup winner on a goal by Dan Herda. With the shootout win, the Huskies brought the I-5 Cup back to Seattle for the first time in six years.
The game started out poorly for the Dawgs after giving up a goal just forty-five seconds into the game. The Ducks would then take a penalty four minutes into the period and the Huskies made them pay on a point shot that found the back of the net by Daniel Carson. Washington then began taking a series of undisciplined penalties. And the Ducks would make the Huskies pay. Oregon scored its second goal on the power play mid-way through the first period. Thirty-five seconds later, the Ducks scored again increasing their lead to 3-1.
To begin the second period the Huskies took their third straight penalty, killed that off and immediately took another penalty. This time however, Corey James got behind the Duck defense and beat Oregon's goaltender on the stick side for a shorthanded goal giving the Huskies some momentum. The Ducks would get called for a penalty with just over half the period left and scored their own shorthanded goal, restoring their two goal lead. Immediately after the goal the Ducks were called for a penalty giving the Dawgs a two-man advantage. Arne Krogh would capitalize bringing the Huskies back within one goal. Corey James would then score another goal with two seconds left in the Ducks second penalty tying the game 4-4. At the end of the second the Huskies again ran into penalty trouble. With Arne Krogh already in the box, Jordan Chernesky leveled a Duck player in the corner and was given a five minute major penalty and tossed from the game. The Ducks would take their own penalty negating a 5-3 advantage but would still score a power play goal with 25 seconds left in the second period. The period ended with the Ducks up 5-4.
The only scoring in the third period came when Phil Harezlak tied the game on a power play goal eight minutes in. And this goal would set the stage for high drama. Neither team could manage another goal through the rest of the period, nor in overtime. Tristan Wickliff was awarded a penalty shot with 1.7 seconds left in overtime, but was denied by the Ducks goaltender which set up the first shootout to decide the game. The Huskies were unable to capitalize in the first shootout, while the Ducks scored three times giving them the win.
With the Duck win, the season series was then tied 2-2 requiring a second shootout to determine the I-5 Cup winner. Both Danny Dougan and the Husky shooters rebounded nicely. Daniel Carson scored on his attempt and after Dougan made some key saves, Dan Herda's number was called. Herda put a hard shot between the Duck netminder's five hole to seal the Cup for the Huskies that set off a wild celebration on the ice and in the stands.
The Huskies have to rebound quickly from the emotional weekend as they host conference rival USC this coming weekend in a key match up that will help determine the PAC-8 tournament seedings. Game times are 10 PM Friday night and 6:30 PM on Saturday night.
Game notes: Byron Ma was still out of the lineup due to injury. The crowd was the largest and loudest crowd in a number of years. Thank you fans! |
| O, What a Night |
| - January 22 |
There is just something special about a rivalry game. You can feel the buzz in the crowd, in the coaches, and in the players. Last night at Olympicview, the buzz was tangible as the Huskies and Ducks took the ice. After a well-played and hard fought game, the Huskies prevailed by a final score of 4-2, giving the Huskies a 2-1 series lead over the Ducks this season.
Both teams came out flying with both delivering huge hits to set the tone that this was going to be a great game. The Huskies would get the first power-play opportunity just two minutes into the game, but took a penalty to negate the advantage. UW controlled play early, but could not capitalize after both teams exchanged goals. That is until Dan Herda banged home a shot with 9:42 left in the first period that set off a loud Husky celebration. The first period would end with the Huskies leading by a goal.
The Ducks came out of the locker room the more aggressive team early on in the second and had the Huskies on their heels a bit, spending a lot of time in their own zone. Danny Dougan kept the Ducks off the score sheet however until the Huskies struck gold again. UW scored its second goal eight minutes into the period when Dan Herda again, beat the Ducks goaltender. There was a scary moment as the Duck net minder laid on the ice for several minutes after the goal after hitting his head. He did return to the game later however and appears to be okay. The goal ignited the Husky bench and you could feel the players' confidence soar. But then a captain did what captains are supposed to do - lead their team. Oregon's captain almost single-handedly took the game over at this point scoring two quick Duck goals to tie the game with three minutes left in the period. Tristan Wickliff had a great opportunity to put the Dawgs up by a goal but missed the net just wide.
Both teams came out tentatively in the third period, but the Ducks got several point blank opportunities to take the lead. Dougan stood tall on all of them. After killing off a penalty the Dawgs got the puck into their zone and Tyler MacMillan let go a shot from the blue line that hit the Oregon goaltender's pads and just trickled over the line. The teams continued to trade shots and hits through the rest of the period. Eventually Phil Harezlak would get an empty net goal in the end to seal the win for the purple squad.
The I-5 cup is on the line Saturday night at 6:30 PM. If the Huskies win, they will take the cup from the Ducks for the first time in 6 years. If Oregon wins the game, the two teams will decide the series winner by shutout. Expect the Ducks to not go quietly and will come out hard. Husky fans, tonight is the night to be in Mountlake Terrace. Come early, be loud. |
| Road Perfection |
| - January 18 |
The Huskies defeated the Stanford Cardinal by a final score of 11-3 today to go a perfect 4-0 on the road. Shane Kanady played in net this afternoon. The win takes the Huskies' PAC-8 record to 9-4. With this road trip success, the Huskies should climb in the PAC-8 standings. The first period was close, ending with UW having the lead 3-2. Then the Huskies poured on the offense, scoring four goals in the second period to increase their lead to 7-2. The Huskies would add four more goals in the final frame to end any thoughts of Stanford making a comeback. UW outscored the Bears and Cardinal by a combined total of 30-8.
Game note: Freshman Corey James scored 4 goals to lead the Huskies.
The Dawgs return home this weekend with plenty of confidence, just in time to meet their rivals, the Oregon Ducks this coming weekend. Game times are 10 PM on Friday night and 6:30 on Saturday night. |
| Huskies still rolling |
| - January 17 |
The Huskies continue to roll in the Bay Area. And so does the offense. The Huskies put up six goals tonight and defeated the Stanford Cardinal by a final of 6-1. Danny Dougan started in net for the Huskies once again and helped shut down the Cardinal attack. The Huskies built a 3-0 lead in the first period and the score remained the same through the second. Thus far the Huskies are 3-0 on the road trip with one game remaining against the Cardinal. The Dawgs' PAC-8 record now stands at 8-4. |
| UW Pounds Cal |
| - January 16 |
The Huskies have found a good home away from home, Berkeley. The Dawgs defeated Cal soundly tonight by a final score of 8-1. This makes the Dawgs 2-0 against Cal this year, a potential PAC-8 tourney foe. Shane Kanady played in goal for the Huskies this evening and kept the Bears at bay all evening. UW will now continue on the road to play the Stanford Cardinal the next two nights.
Game note: Phil Harezlak scored his first career hat trick as a Husky. |
| Dawgs Defeat the Bears |
| - January 15 |
The Husky road trip is off to a good start this weekend. The Huskies defeated the Cal Bears tonight in Berkeley by a final score of 5-3. Danny Dougan played in net for the Huskies. The Bears and Huskies are fourth and fifth in the PAC-8 respectively despite the Huskies having a better PAC-8 record thus far. The win boosts the Huskies PAC-8 record to 6-4 and drops Cal's record to 4-7. The two teams will meet again tonight in Berkeley. |
| Game Misconduct: Huskies Lose |
| - January 9 |
Long Beach State ran away with tonight's game in the second period. In a game that featured three ejections, a goalie change and more hits, the Huskies lost 7-2. The loss keeps the Huskies winless against non-conference opponents. Last night the game was much more evenly matched. Tonight's game looked to be the same, until the middle of the second period.
Once again taking the ice in their new white jerseys, the Huskies came out with Shane Kanady in net. The first period was a much more disciplined period of hockey by both teams with LBS scoring the periods lone goal with two minutes left until intermission. The physical play featuring several big hits was still there, but the players kept cooler heads after the whistles.
LBS got on the board quickly in the 2nd period, scoring one minute in. Things might have gotten out of hand, but the Huskies responded nicely with their own goal two minutes later off the stick of Daniel Carson. He let a slap shot fly from the left faceoff circle that beat the LBS goaltender. Things really started looking up when Phil Harezlak got the puck deep in the LBS zone and beat the goalie on a beautiful individual move less than a minute later. With the score tied 2-2 however, the Huskies fell apart. LBS scored a goal almost a minute later and added two quick ones, scoring three times in two minutes. Shane Kanady was pulled halfway through the period after LBS scored a 6th goal. The difference in the game appeared to be the willingness of the LBS players to attack the net at all cost.
The final frame featured a Husky parade to the penalty box, including three players getting tossed from the game on misconduct calls. The Huskies allowed only one goal despite being shorthanded a good portion of the period. The Dawgs could muster no offense however and the game never got closer. Long Beach State walked away with a 7-2 victory.
The Huskies will head out on the road this coming weekend to face conference foes California and Stanford. This coming weekend will most likely determine the Huskies fate in the PAC-8 this year as far as making the conference playoffs.
Game notes: Byron Ma was out again due to an injury. Chris Fox played in his second game this year for the Huskies. The Huskies are 0-7 outside of conference play this year. The Huskies next 8 games are against PAC-8 opponents. |
| HUSKIES LOSE SPIRITED GAME |
| - January 8 |
The Dawgs took to the ice for the first time in 2010 against Long Beach State tonight and lost by a final of 4-1. The game was much closer than the final score indicates, with Long Beach State holding a one goal lead most of the night. The game also featured plenty of punishing hits and spirited play.
Danny Dougan started in net and kept the Forty-Niners at bay for most of the first period. LBS scored their only goal of the period about 9 minutes into the game on a beautiful backdoor play. The first period was fast paced with both teams taking shots at each other whenever possible. The first frame ended right there at 1-0.
LBS would go up 2-0 two minutes into the second period and at this point the Huskies dug in. The Huskies battled hard in front of the LBS and finally put one away with two minutes left in the second period and that's where the period ended, 2-1. Roughing minors and pushing after the whistle picked up in this period which would set the tone for the final frame.
The third period was a very scrappy period with a lot of trash talk and nonsense after whistles as the game remained 2-1. The Huskies big break came on a five minute powerplay eight minutes into the period, but the Huskies failed to take advantage and tie the game. With just under four minutes left in the period, LBS added another goal all but ending the Huskies comeback attempts. LBS would add a late goal making the final score 4-1.
The two teams will renew their battle Saturday night at 6:30 PM at Olympicview Arena in Mountlake Terrace.
Game notes: Assistant Captain Byron Ma did not play due to an injury. Chris Fox played on defense wearing #6. The Huskies wore their new home white jerseys (and new player numbers). |
| HUSKIES, DUCKS SPLIT |
| - November 22 |
The Huskies and Ducks met this weekend for the first time since last year's PAC-8 championship game. The Huskies traveled to Eugene looking to avenge last year's loss. On Friday night, the Huskies were shut out by the Ducks by the final score of 3-0. On Saturday night, the two teams played a close game with the Huskies finally prevailing by the score of 4-3. Oregon took a 1-0 lead after the first period, but three second period goals put the Huskies in the lead for good. The Huskies had not beaten the Ducks in several years. The split keeps the Huskies hopes alive of winning the I-5 Cup for the first time in years. The two teams will meet again in Seattle in late January.
Next up for Washington is a tournament in McCall, Idaho where the Huskies will face-off against Washington State, Boise State and Utah this coming weekend. |
| Vikings Conquer Dawgs |
| - November 14 |
In what can be described as another disappointing weekend, the Huskies were conquered by the Western Washington Vikings in a home and home series. The Vikings outscored the Huskies by a total of 12-2. After defeating the Huskies on Friday night by a score of 4-1, the Vikings came out on Saturday night and made quick work of the Huskies by the end of the first period. The big difference between the two teams? Discipline. The Vikings forced the Huskies into numerous turnovers both in their own zone and through the neutral zone. The Huskies were never able to mount a sustained attack. Even the Husky powerplay was ineffective with the pressure the Vikings put on the puck. Saturday night's final ended up being a resounding 8-1 defeat for the purple side.
The Huskies lone goal scorer on Saturday night was Corey James, late in the third period when he cashed in on a shorthanded breakaway. The two loses put the Huskies at 4-8 overall (0-5 in non-conference games) and 4-3 in the Pac-8 with all but one win against last place WSU.
The road does not get any easier this week for the Huskies as they travel to Eugene to take on an Oregon squad that is again the top of the conference talent. |
| Huskies Split Weekend with Bruins |
| - November 8 |
(Game report from the PAC-8 web site) After losing a hearbreaker to UCLA in the final minute on Friday night, the Huskies bounced back and outplayed the Bruins on Saturday night.
The Huskies came on strong Saturday night, scoring 3 goals in the 1st period. The 2nd period wasn't much different; UCLA scored a goal at 11:28, but then Washington came back with 3 more unanswered goals. UCLA battled back in the 3rd period, outscoring the Huskies 3-1 in the final frame. But it was a 7-4 final for Washington tonight, and a split for the weekend. Corey James scored twice for the Huskies; Dan Carson, Will Kelly, Phil Harzelak, Dan Herda, and Ian Shook got the other UW goals. Daniel Vaynter scored 3 of UCLA's goals; Andy Holton also scored for the Bruins.
The win puts the Huskies above .500 once again in Pac-8 play for the season. The win against the Bruins is also the first against another Pac-8 team other than the Cougars. The Dawgs will play out of conference this coming weekend with a home and home series with Western Washington. |
| LMU Downs Husky Squad |
| - November 5 |
The Huskies have played eight games thus far this season and they are truly a Jekyll & Hyde team. All three of the Husky wins have come against WSU. The five loses have come against three other teams. The Huskies lost their first game in SoCal tonight against Loyola Marymount University by a final score of 9-4.
Click here to see the game report on LMU's website.
The Huskies will look to right the ship against UCLA on Friday night. Game time is 8:30 PM. |
| Huskies Maul Cougars |
| - October 24 |
(Game report from the PAC-8 web site) The 2009-2010 Apple Cup competition continued on Cougar ice, but the result was the same: the Huskies beat the Cougars. The Huskies scored 6 unanswered goals in the 1st period, then pulled away from the Cougars in each of the remaining periods, to best WSU, 14-1.
The Huskies have the coming weekend off and then will travel to Los Angeles the first weekend of November to take on Loyola Marymount and UCLA. |
| Huskies Lose 4th Straight |
| - October 17 |
The first five minutes of the game went the Huskies way. The rest of the game did not. Danny Dougan started in front of a shorthanded Husky roster. The bench was so short that Nelson Beazley had to suit up as backup goaltender - for the first time EVER.
The Huskies opened the game with two goals within five minutes and looked to have erased the woes of the previous night. However, that was very short lived. By the end of the first period the Vikings had again skated by the Huskies gaining a 4-2 advantage.
The Vikings continued their scoring ways, outscoring the Huskies 2-1 in the second period and 1-0 in the third period for a final score of 7-3.
The Huskies finish their opening homestand a disappointing 2-4. They now take to the road for the next few weekends of the season. The road trip may come at a good time as the Huskies seem to be disjointed a bit. Hopefully the road will begin to turn the group into a team.
Game notes: The Huskies played without Bryce Johnson, Dan Herda, Arne Krogh, Monica Jones, Daniel Carson and Shane Kanady. |
| Vikings Steamroll Huskies |
| - October 16 |
The Huskies wore pink to honor a higher cause. Portland State ran over the Huskies. Led by their captain, Anthony Libonati, the Vikings won on Friday night by a final score of 8-4. Shane Kanady got the start in the net for the Huskies and kept the Huskies close through 2 1/2 periods despite a barrage of shots from the Vikings.
PSU got on the board quickly in the first period, scoring a minute and half into the game. The Huskies came out sluggish, getting beat to every loose puck. The Huskies underestimated PSU's speed. PSU put on a clinic of transitioning from defense to offense off of Husky turnovers. Not only would one player capitalize, but two or three Vikings would quickly counter attack. The Huskies fell further behind on a shorthanded goal by the Vikings captain with 12:00 minutes left in the first. The first period would end with the Vikings up 3-0 on an overwhelmed Husky squad.
The Huskies came out with more grit in what was a very chippy second period. Players on both sides engaged in a lot of chirping. The Huskies would score their first goal on a 5 on 3 advantage when Tristan Wickliff found Tyler MacMillan sneaking in from the blue line. The Vikings would answer four minutes later restoring the three goal lead. On this goal however, PSU celebrated in the Husky crease which is a generally considered poor sportsmanship and this seemed to fire the Huskies up. Will Kelly scored a mere 45 seconds later making the score 4-2. Phil Harezlak would then score with 56 seconds left in the period to bring the Huskies within a goal.
In the third, the sides exchanged penalties and the Huskies were incapable of tying the game. PSU scored 7 minutes into the period increasing their lead to 5-3. Jordan Chernesky scored midway through the period again bringing the Huskies close. From that moment on however, the Viking's captain took over the game. The game ended with a final score of 8-4. Anthony Libonati (#16) for the Vikings had a monster night, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists. #3 Alex Zsenyuk finished the night with 1 goal and 4 assists.
The Huskies will need to find a way to shut down these two players if they want to win the game on Saturday night. Both teams meet again Saturday, October 17th at 6:30 PM.
Game notes: The Huskies played without Bryce Johnson, Dan Herda and Arne Krogh. Corey James had several great scoring chances and some unlucky bounces. |
| BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WEEKEND |
| - October 13 |
The Huskies will be raising money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer at the games against Portland State this coming weekend. The team will be wearing pink laces, pink tape on the sticks, and pink ribbon stickers on the helmets. The team hopes to raise money by selling merchandise and collecting donations at the door, so please bring your generosity. The team will also hold a raffle as well. The Huskies will be donating the money to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation - Puget Sound Affiliate. Come out this weekend for good hockey and for a great cause!
Friday night's game begins at 10:00 PM and the puck drops on Saturday night at 6:30 PM. Feel free to wear pink to show your support. Fill the house with both pink and noise! Go Huskies! |
| ASU Handles the Huskies |
| - October 12 |
(Game reports from the PAC-8 web site) The rivalry was apparent from the beginning, and special teams played a key role throughout the game. For ASU, Joe Saeger and Troy Hickey scored their first career goals, helping the Ice Devils take a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period. The Huskies scored to make it a one-goal game, then pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. ASU scored in the empty net to seal their victory over the Huskies.
The Saturday rematch between ASU and Washington was intense, battling evenly through a scoreless first period. Penalties hampered the Husky attack. Behind the solid ASU defense, goalie Scott Berry got his first career shut-out in the 4-0 ASU victory! ASU team captain, Jake Norwood, scored his first goal of the year.
The Huskies play for the third weekend in a row at home against Portland State in a non-conference match up. Game time on Friday night is 10:00 PM and on Saturday at 6:30 PM. |
| Opening sweep |
| - October 3 |
The Huskies started out the season with a two game sweep of the visiting Washington State Cougars. On Saturday night, the Huskies came out ready to play and grabbed the lead in the game and never looked back. Shane Kanady got the start between the pipes for the Dawgs and played solidly allowing only three Coug goals. The Huskies won a penalty filled affair by the final score of 11-3 in front of a nice sized crowd.
The Huskies used a balanced scoring attack and shut down defense on Saturday to earn the victory. Eight different Huskies scored goals which is a good sign for the season if the trend continues. Newcomer Phil Harezlak opened the scoring for the Huskies on a shot from the left side of the crease that beat the WSU goaltender up high. Dan Herda scored for the second straight game next for the Huskies. Will Kelly and Tyler MacMillan added goals to give the Huskies a 4-2 first period lead. The first period featured too many penalties, 11 on UW and 6 on WSU.
The Huskies would tally five more goals in the second period. Shane Kanady and the Husky defense shut the Cougs out this period. Both teams settled down and received fewer penalty calls but still manage to deliver huge hits. Among the goal scorers this period would be Dan Herda (2nd of the night), Tristan Wickliff and Corey James.
The third period featured less offense, but even more physical play. Bryce Johnson leveled a Cougar forward near the Cougar bench late in the period on what may have been the biggest hit of the night. The physical play of the third definitely set up an interesting match up between the same two teams in a couple of weeks across the mountains.
Other notes: The Huskies were playing without defenseman Arne Krogh. Tristan Wickliff played the weekend while sick. Will Kelly injured his knee late in Saturday's game, but the injury does not appear to be serious.
The Huskies remain home this coming weekend to host the Arizona State Sun Devils. Game times are 10:00 PM on Friday and 6:30 PM on Saturday. Come out to support the Huskies and help them defend home ice. |
| HUSKIES RUN OVER WSU FOR SEASON OPENING WIN |
| - October 2 |
The Husky Hockey team defeated WSU by a final score of 8-2 on Friday night with a combination of physical play, good defense and a relentless offensive attack. WSU came out of the gates on fire and scored its only two goals of the night in the first minute of the game. What was looking like a bad game for the Huskies quickly turned when Tristan Wickliff, battling illness, scored his first goal of the season five minutes into the first period making the score 2-1. Two minutes later the Huskies tied the score on a slap shot from Tyler MacMillan from the blue line. After trading penalties, the opening period ended 2-2.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the second period on Tristan Wickliff's second goal of the night with five minutes elapsed. They would not surrender the lead. Stifling defense for the rest of the night prevented any more WSU goals. Dan Herda scored his first goal as a Husky mid way through the period as he brought the puck down the right side of the ice and let a wrist shot go that beat the WSU goaltender. The second period would end with the Huskies leading 5-2 on Jordan Chernesky's first goal of the season.
The Huskies added three more goals in the third period on goals by Daniel Carson, Byron Ma and Corey James (first goal as a Husky). Danny Dougan played in net for the Dawgs and kept the Cougars at bay for 59 minutes of the game. Danny is off to what could be a breakout season for him.
The two teams renew the rivalry on Saturday, October 3rd at 8:05 PM. Come early, be loud! |
